Patton Gets Pan-Am Tennis Post, but UC Irvine Denied NCAA Bid

UC Irvine men’s tennis Coach Greg Patton got good and bad news Wednesday.

On the day that Patton received word that his team would miss the NCAA playoffs for the first time in five seasons, he learned he had been named the coach of the U.S. team at the Pan American Games in August in Havana, Cuba.

Even though UC Irvine (18-9) finished the men’s tennis season ranked No. 16 in the nation, it wasn’t among the 20 teams to make the playoffs.

Patton said Irvine’s chances were hurt by finishing second to Fresno State in the Big West Conference championships last month. The Bulldogs (12-10) also didn’t receive a bid.

Four teams that Irvine defeated--Kentucky, Miami, Kansas and New Mexico--were included in the field.
