SOFTBALL : COLLEGE WORLD SERIES : UCLA Defeats Missouri, 5-0, Then Eliminates Long Beach

UCLA remained in contention for its fourth consecutive national softball championship by defeating Missouri, 5-0, and Cal State Long Beach, 1-0 in 11 innings, Saturday at the women’s College World Series at Oklahoma City.
Missouri was eliminated, as was Long Beach, which, besides losing to UCLA, earlier lost to Arizona, 1-0. Fresno State remained alive by eliminating Florida State, 3-0, and then, in the final game of the day, handing Arizona its first loss, 1-0 in eight innings.
UCLA, Fresno and Arizona all have one loss going into the final day of the tournament today. UCLA and Fresno meet at 11:30 a.m., PDT, with the winner taking on Arizona for the championship.
Against Missouri, UCLA’s DeDe Weiman hit a bases-loaded double in the second inning to score two runs, and the Bruins added two more in the inning on three Missouri errors.
Against Long Beach, UCLA’s Lorraine Maynez knocked in the winning run with a bases-loaded single after Lisa Fernandez and Yvonne Gutierrez opened the 11th with back-to-back singles, followed by an intentional walk.
Weiman was the starting pitcher against the 49ers, with Heather Compton (21-3) relieving in the 10th to get the win.
