OBITUARY : Esther Davis; Founded Communications Dept.

Esther Ritter Davis, founder of the University of La Verne Communications Department and deputy director of the La Verne Energy Institute until her retirement in 1988, has died of cancer. She was 82.
Davis, who joined the faculty in 1976, previously was head of the Communications Department at Pasadena City College and served as assistant superintendent in the Los Angeles Community College District for 23 years.
She is survived by her husband, Charles, of San Clemente, who has created a scholarship fund for communications students.
