Cyprus

I must object to your condescending attitude toward the bid of “tiny Cyprus” to join the European Community (World Report, July 16). Do newspapers in Europe comment on “tiny Delaware’s” membership in the United States? Your article declined to mention that Cyprus is already in full customs union with the EC. Its economy, according to your own figures, is robust. Its bid for membership is credible and serious. In addition, Cyprus does not want to join the EC simply out of fear of Turkey, as you imply: Membership makes good economic sense, for all concerned.
