Milena Glusac of Fallbrook High and Margarito Casillas of Glendale Hoover ran to victory at the Kinney Western Regional cross-country championships Saturday in Fresno.
Glusac led from the start and won the girls race by 12 seconds over runner-up Heidi Van Borkulo of Seattle Blanchet in 17 minutes 11 seconds over the 5,000-meter course.
Casillas won the boys race in 15:02, holding off Newbury Park’s Jeff Wilson (15:05) and Agoura’s Ryan Wilson (15:07). The first nine runners finished within 10 seconds--the closest finish in the 13-year history of the meet. The top eight qualified for the national meet Dec. 14 in San Diego.
Despite rain and mud, Glusac ran within four seconds of the Woodward Park course record.
