General Cinema Changes Name: General Cinema Corp. is changing its name to Harcourt General Inc. effective Monday, the company announced at its annual meeting. Robert J. Tarr Jr., the firm’s president and chief executive, said the change “reflects the major strategic repositioning undertaken by the company over the past 18 months.” In November, 1991, General Cinema acquired Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc., an educational and scientific publisher. As a result, publishing now accounts for more than half the company’s operating earnings, Tarr said.
