COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Powell the Whole Offense in Titans’ Victory

Center fielder Dante Powell drove in all four runs, including one with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, as Cal State Fullerton beat UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, in the Big West Conference baseball opener for both teams Friday at Santa Barbara.
Powell had a sacrifice fly in the first, then added a two-run triple in the eighth to tie it, 3-3. He also went far to his right to right field to made a running catch on a ball hit by Matt Bokmeier to start the bottom of the 10th.
Ted Silva (2-1), who pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, then struck out the next two hitters to finish the victory for Cal State Fullerton (9-7). UC Santa Barbara is 9-11-1.
In nonconference baseball:
Chapman 13, Portland 4--Buster Nietzke had three hits and four RBIs, and Brian Green had four hits and four runs scored to lead Chapman (11-11) at Hart Park. Bert Horn allowed four hits and two earned runs in eight innings to earn the victory for the Panthers.
In nonconference women’s gymnastics:
Cal State Fullerton 189.05, UC Santa Barbara 186.40--Celeste Delia won the all-around, balance beam and floor exercise to lead Fullerton (8-6).
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:
Azusa Pacific 5, Southern California 4--Bobby Carlton won at No. 2 singles, 7-5 and 6-3, for Southern California (5-5).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Baylor 5, UC Irvine 1--Ali Yoshimoto won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, for UC Irvine (3-8).
In Big West Conference men’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Pacific 0--Jeff Uhrig had 15 kills to lead UC Irvine (2-11, 1-10) which won, 15-11, 15-10, 15-12, to break a nine-match losing streak.
