Young Ballplayers Raise $8,000 for Basketball League

About 150 youths from the Central City Basketball Assn. raised $8,000 in a free-throw contest this month at the Broadway Plaza. The money will be used to fund the league, which features teams representing eight Central City organizations.
In its second year, the league includes teams representing the P.F. Bresee Foundation, Heart of Los Angeles, the Union Rescue Mission, Central City Action Committee, Rampart Explorers, El Centro del Pueblo, Echo Park Boys & Girls Club and Ketchum Downtown YMCA.
Players secured sponsors to donate money for each free throw made. Some shot more than 1,000 free throws, said Mitch Moore, one of the contest organizers.
“The goal was to raise money, but also to get the kids actively involved in taking ownership of their league,” Moore said.
The event was sponsored by the Broadway Plaza/Cushman & Wakefield in partnership with Heart of Los Angeles Youth and the Bresee Foundation.
