A man was struck and killed by a Metro Rail train early Saturday when he drove his Isuzu Trooper through an intersection as the train passed, city fire officials said.
“The crossing arms were down and were functioning, the bells were ringing and the lights were flashing,” said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Phil Weireter. “Apparently he drove around the crossing arms, and while he was right in the center, he was hit by the train.”
Fire Department officials would not identify the victim but described him as a white male about 26 years old. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision occurred about 6:30 a.m. at 41st Street and Long Beach Avenue in southeast Los Angeles, Weireter said. Passengers on the train were examined by firefighters and paramedics, but none required treatment for injuries.
