CALIFORNIA, Md. — A toad about the size of a half-dollar has blocked a $2.3-million road construction project, even through it has not been seen here in several years and is thriving elsewhere.
Plans to widen 3.6 miles of road in St. Mary’s County in southern Maryland are on hold while a solution is sought, project manager Anne Germain said.
The species is doing well in the South but is considered in jeopardy in Maryland, the northern edge of its range.
