COMPTON : Community College Names New President

The Board of Trustees at Compton Community College has appointed Byron R. Skinner to replace Warren A. Washington as president. Washington was fired earlier this year after an audit found that federal funds had been misspent.
Skinner, vice chancellor of multicultural affairs at the Alamo Community College District in San Antonio, will begin his duties Nov. 1. Skinner, 61, spent several years in the California Community College system as president of San Jose City College. Skinner signed a four-year contract that pays $82,000 a year, school officials said.
The trustees said they hoped Skinner will bring changes to the campus. “We need some instant stability here,” trustee Kent Swift said.
Washington came under fire late last year when a U.S. Department of Education investigation concluded that nearly $500,000 in federal money had been spent improperly.
Washington sued the college district in June, demanding reinstatement.
