Orange Coast’s Balanced Attack Stops Pasadena, 36-11

COSTA MESA — Orange Coast used a 22-point spurt in the second quarter to bury visiting Pasadena, 36-11, in a Mission Conference football game Saturday night.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Pirates (1-2), who dismantled Pasadena (0-4) with a balanced attack.

Quarterback Todd Mather completed nine of 16 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for one score. Running back Jeff Clayton, a freshman from Trabuco Hills, rushed 14 times for a game-high 97 yards and a touchdown.

Pasadena took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on Art Jimenez’s 24-yard field goal with 7:45 remaining in the quarter. But the Lancers didn’t score again until the fourth quarter as Orange Coast dominated.

Clayton’s 35-yard scoring run on the first play of the second quarter gave the Pirates a 7-3 lead with 14:51 remaining in the half. Ulysses Trammell caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Eric Coleman on a halfback option with 9:02 left in the half to make it 14-3. Mather’s 12-yard scramble and a two-point conversion increased the Pirates’ lead to 22-3 at the half.

Mather’s 46-yard scoring pass to Chris Perry on Orange Coast’s first drive of the second half and a touchdown run by Manny Bonilla early in the fourth quarter completed the rout.
