Crash Kills Former Cornhusker

Former Nebraska tight end Jerry List and his wife were among five killed in a single-engine airplane crash near the northern Nebraska community of Stuart. Jerry and Susan List were 43.

List played in 1970-72 and was a member of two national championship teams. List had 61 catches for 901 yards and five touchdowns in his career.

Also killed were George Medlock and Virginia Medlock, his wife. Medlock was the president of First National Bank of Valentine and List was vice president.

The pilot of the airplane, Tod Keller, also was killed in the crash. The airplane, which was en route to Lincoln, struck a truck-trailer and a hog shed shortly after taking off. There was heavy fog at the time of the crash.

Boxing

Kennedy McKinney dominated Jesus Salud to retain his International Boxing Federation junior-featherweight championship at Stateline, Nev., on a unanimous decision. Salud (45-6) absorbed a fierce pounding by McKinney, who remained unbeaten in 25 fights with 15 knockouts.

McKinney, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist at 119 pounds, opened a cut at the corner of Salud’s left eye at the beginning of the 11th round. The right eye began bleeding in the 12th.

Anaclet Wamba successfully defended his World Boxing Council cruiserweight title against Akim Tafer at Levallois, France, in the first all-French championship fight in nearly 60 years. Tafer, who had a swollen left eye, did not answer the bell for the eighth round.

It was the fifth defense for Wamba, who won the title in 1991. He is 42-2 with 22 knockouts.
