Jason Smith was hit by Amtrak’s San Diegan at about 10:20 p.m., less than a mile west of the San Clemente train station near the city pier, said Howard Robertson, an Amtrak spokesman. The train left San Diego on its way to Los Angeles at 9 p.m.
