Pie-Tin Proto-Frisbees Caught on Film in 1940

Your recent article on the Frisbee (“From a Passion for Frisbees Comes a Career,” Oct. 25) noted that the famous plastic flying saucer was first introduced in 1957 and that, since then, millions have been sold.
That has prompted me to search for these photos which I took 17 years earlier in 1940 of two men tossing and catching metal pie plates at a local beach. The plates soared beautifully and were fascinating to watch.
The Frisbee, of course, soars even more beautifully and doesn’t leave a dent in one’s forehead when a catch is missed.
