OUTLOOK
After the Aztecs’ fifth-place finish last season, it seems the only place to go is up. Hill, entering his 13th season, returns six lettermen from last year’s 10-13 squad, including Foss and Kierulff, both all-league honorable-mention selections. Kierulff, who was the state high-jump champion as a freshman, should use her height and athleticism to her advantage, and could be one of the top guards in the league. Foss, a sophomore, along with returning sophomore Daniels and junior Gethins make one of the tallest front-court trios in the league. Adding to the Aztecs’ height is Walsh, up from last year’s junior varsity squad. The Aztecs’ abundance of height should offset their lack of outside shooting, but Hill says he expects them to struggle with their passing game. Hill’s goals this season are 20 victories and the league title, but he gives Cypress the nod as league favorite, believing the Aztecs and El Dorado will challenge. “El Dorado may be a little less strong,” he said. “But Cypress almost has the same team. We had a good summer and I feel pretty positive.”
