What to do on the Weekends

In this performance, the audience stars.
The occasion is the 21st Annual Sing-Along Messiah on Sunday at El Camino College, in which the audience will collaborate with a pianist and four soloists to sing Handel’s masterpiece.
Directing will be Jane Hardester, a retired El Camino College music professor. The soloists will be soprano Jan Hook, alto Amanda de Ryck, tenor Howard Sheppard and bass Max Mendoza. Robert Haag will be at the piano.
Organizers point out that the event is BYOS: Bring Your Own Scores. Audience members will be asked to seat themselves according to their vocal range (baritones with baritones, tenors with tenors, etc.) and will receive only about 15 minutes of instruction before the performance begins.
The accent will be on spirit, not execution. Says Haag: “We just blaze right through, come what may.”
