Meggison, a fourth-year coach, knows the feeling of having to start rolling that rock up the hill again. For him, it’s called a rebuilding year. From being close to the top of the heap, to being at the bottom. “We lost some very important people last year,” said Meggison, whose team finished second in league in 1993 with a record of 18-6, 10-5. “A big loss for us was Alfredo Garcia, who was MVP of the Freeway League, all-county, All-Southern Section, MVP of the Orange County All-Star game and led the county in earned-run average. “It’s hard to replace someone of that caliber.” Also graduating was all-league pitcher Alfonse Flores and shortstop Jason Cabral. In all, seven starters are gone. Nevertheless, Meggison is straight forward about the situtation. “When you have 10 freshmen and 11 sophomores, you have no illusions about things,” he said. That’s not to say this year will be a waste. Far from it, he said, noting that rebuilding is part of the grand scheme. He does expect some good things from Greg Cabral, Jason’s younger brother. Meggison expects Cabral to be one of his key players at shortstop. The league will be tough with Troy, Fullerton and La Habra. “We’ve got some young kids this year. And I’m sure we’ll make lots of mistakes. But in time these kids will learn and get better. We’ll be back.”
