SIMI VALLEY : Rezoning for Arts Center to Be Decided

The Simi Valley City Council will decide today whether to rezone land at Church and School streets to allow a cultural arts center project to proceed.
The land, now planned in part for residential use, would have to be rezoned for commercial use to allow conversion of an aging church into a 300-seat theater.
The Planning Commission in February approved the rezoning, and Councilwoman Judy Mikels said she expected the council to follow suit.
“This is just to make sure we’ve got the right zoning,” Mikels said. “We’re already moving forward on this project.”
Initial approval to design and plan the center was granted by the council in August. Renovation is expected to cost the city $2.8 million. When completed, the center will include a theater, banquet hall and 78-space parking lot.
