OUTLOOK
Traditionally one of the league’s stronger teams, the Colonists struggled last season and finished last. Anaheim failed to qualify for the postseason after making five trips in the previous six seasons. Torres is confident things will improve. “We played a lot of the younger kids last season,” Torres said. “That should be a big help.” Chwan is the most talented of Anaheim’s 14 returning players. A three-year starter, Chawn batted .333 with 21 runs batted in and six doubles. Also a defensive standout, Chawn was a second-team all-league selection. “He made big improvements from his sophomore year,” Torres said. “He’s very confident out there and he knows his job.” Carlos (.324) anchors the infield. He has good range and a strong enough arm to make difficult plays. Torres expects Moreno to provide the Colonists with several quality innings as their No. 1 starter. Moreno, primarily a reliever as a junior, was 2-2 with a 3.46 earned-run average. Jimenez, Mejia and Navarrette should help make up a quality pitching staff. “We’ll have to scrap for our runs,” Torres said, “but we should be strong in terms of defense and pitching.”
