Whistler’s Restored ‘Arrangement’ at Getty
- Share via
“Arrangement in Black: Pablo de Sarasate,” a recently restored painting by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, is on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum until the end of May.
The 1884 portrait of the internationally renowned violinist and composer belongs to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, which loaned the work to the museum in Malibu in exchange for conservation services.
Prior to putting the painting on display, Getty conservators removed a confusing array of paint applied by earlier restorers and revealed Whistler’s subtle variations of light and shade.
