Nation IN BRIEF : CONNECTICUT : U.S. Recognizes Mohegan Nation

The United States has declared the Mohegan Indians a sovereign nation, recognizing a tribe whose ancestors fought side by side with the first English settlers and opening the way for a 20th-Century bonanza. The decision sets the stage for construction of Connecticut’s second major gambling resort. The Mohegan lands are about 40 miles southeast of Hartford--covering about 2,400 acres--and are in an area steeped in Colonial American history.
