BREA : Schools Adopt Policy Banning Weapons

Brea Olinda Unified School District trustees this week adopted a policy prohibiting students from carrying firearms or other weapons at school.
Under the policy, students who bring weapons--including guns, knives, dirks, daggers, razors, pepper spray, Mace or other dangerous instruments--and display or threaten others will face expulsion.
Students who are caught with replicas of weapons also face suspension, district officials said.
District employees also have the right to confiscate any weapons they find on school grounds or at school-sponsored events elsewhere.
In the past, the district had relied on Education Code guidelines against weapons. The new policy now bans specific weapons and outlines the consequences for carrying weapons.
Since school began in September, two students have been expelled for carrying knives in school, Assistant Supt. Peter J. Boothroyd said.
The policy, he said, “makes it clear to the community that we do not allow weapons at school.”
