5.0 Quake Rattles Ensenada, but No Damage Reported

SAN DIEGO — A moderate earthquake struck 25 miles east-southeast of Ensenada, Mexico, on Tuesday evening, rattling buildings as far north as San Diego but causing no reported damage or injuries.
Caltech officials in Pasadena said the magnitude 5.0 temblor occurred at 6:59 p.m., followed four minutes later by a magnitude 3.7 aftershock.
“It was as if a very large truck passed by and made the buildings shake,” said Eduardo de la Vega, director of the municipal police in Ensenada, which is the third-largest city in the Mexican state of Baja California.
“We have no reports of problems here or in other parts of the state,” Vega said. Officials of the federal highway patrol in Ensenada also reported no problems.
About 120,000 people live in Ensenada, with at least 80,000 in the surrounding countryside. Fire officials in the city said they had communicated by radio with Ajos Negros, a town of about 5,000 people near the epicenter, and that they reported no injuries or serious damage.
