PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Nov. 28, 1993: President Carlos Salinas de Gortari appoints Luis Donaldo Colosio the ruling party candidate for the Aug. 21 elections, nearly assuring him the presidency.
March 22: Manuel Camacho Solis, though urged to run, says he will not oppose Colosio.
March 23: Colosio is killed during a campaign rally in Tijuana. Salinas, limited to only one term, must now pick someone else, and the field appears limited.
INDIAN REBELLION
Jan. 1: A rebel Indian group declares war on the government and seizes towns in Chiapas, the southernmost state. The rebels say they want democracy and better living conditions for poor Indians.
Jan. 3: The army claims to recapture four cities taken by rebels.
Jan. 10: President Salinas appoints Camacho Solis as government envoy.
Jan. 10-16: Huge anti-war protests in Mexico City.
Jan. 12: Salinas declares unilateral cease-fire.
Feb. 21: Negotiations begin in Chiapas.
Feb. 24: Rebels and Camacho Solis announce tentative agreements. Rebels say they will take accords to local communities for approval.
