77 Wild Horses, Burros Offered for Adoption

VALLEJO, Calif. — Wild horses could--and did--drag admirers to a Vallejo fairgrounds Saturday as federal officials offered 77 mustangs and burros for adoption during a special weekend program.
The Bureau of Land Management began capturing the wild animals and putting them up for adoption in 1973. Since then, more than 140,000 burros and horses have been taken in nationwide.
By limiting herd sizes, the program prevents death by starvation. It also furthers an ecological balance in the wilds.
A horse can be adopted for $125, a burro for $75. Fifty-nine animals were gone by 5 p.m. Friday, according to bureau spokeswoman Laura Harris.
