Baritone David Giuliano, a senior at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, and soprano Lauren Spicer, a sophomore at Diamond Bar High School, have won top honors in the fourth annual high school vocal competition sponsored by Opera Pacific. Giuliano and Spicer, who were among 37 candidates, won $600 each. Soprano Shayleen Thompson, a junior at Los Alamitos High School, and baritone Kristoffer Todd Mihalka, a senior at Santa Margarita High School, won $300 second-place awards. Third place winners, receiving $150 each, were soprano Lindsay Snyder, a sophomore at El Toro High School, and baritone Grant Arnow, a junior at Santa Margarita. Encouragement awards of $75 went to soprano Mary E. Vitek, a freshman at Capistrano Valley High School; baritone David M. Gerber, a senior at Fullerton Union High School, and soprano Susan Huarte, a senior at Mater Dei. Judges included Violet Mesrop, a professor at Pepperdine University, and Lori Burrill and Henri Venanzi, both of Opera Pacific.
