Bid to Save Two Men’s Programs at UCLA Turned Down by Court

Superior Judge Alan Haber in Santa Monica denied an application for a preliminary injunction against UCLA that would have forced the school to reinstate its men’s swimming and men’s gymnastics programs.
UCLA said last August that it would drop men’s swimming and men’s and women’s gymnastics after the 1993-94 academic year, but reinstated women’s gymnastics two weeks later when threatened with a gender-equity lawsuit.
Members of the men’s swimming and men’s gymnastics teams were awarded a temporary restraining order on April 18 preventing the school from cutting the programs, but Tuesday’s decision allows UCLA to proceed with their elimination.
Ivan W. Halperin, the attorney representing the male swimmers and gymnasts, said he has not determined whether he will appeal the decision.
