Shooting by presumed drug traffickers forced the Brazilian army to divert a convoy of cars carrying Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari to an international summit, a Brazilian news agency reported. Salinas and his staff arrived in Rio de Janeiro’s international airport Thursday and were due to drive down the Linha Vermelha, or Red Line, when army units on the highway reported shooting in one of the numerous shantytowns nearby, the Estado agency said. An army colonel quoted by Estado said he believed drug traffickers were behind the shooting. No shots were fired by the army, he said.
