IRVINE — A 35-year-old transient was found dead at the edge of the UC Irvine campus Wednesday morning. There was no evidence of foul play, police said.
The man’s identity was not released pending notification of his family. A motorist spotted the body about 8 a.m. on a slope behind the school’s baseball field at University Drive and Mesa Road, according to Dennis L. Powers, assistant chief of campus police.
An autopsy did not immediately determine how he died, but revealed no signs of violence.
“It’s not a suspicious death at this point. There’s no indication of homicide or suicide,” Powers said.
It will take two weeks for results of chemical tests to determine if the man died of natural causes or a drug overdose, Powers said.
Powers said the man had a number of addresses around the county and had been chased off campus by police for trespassing and loitering during the past year. Police found a makeshift encampment behind nearby bushes that might have been the man’s home, Powers said.
