Microsoft, Visa to Develop Secure Electronic Payment System: The software giant and the credit card purveyor said they will work together to develop a secure method for transmitting credit-card information between buyers and merchants. The effort could eventually make it much easier for customers and merchants to conduct business over the Internet computer network or other on-line computer services. The technology will be based on Microsoft’s popular operating system Windows and will be available in 1995. It will include encryption capabilities--which scramble sensitive information so that only the intended receiver can read it--from RSA Data Security Inc., a closely held Silicon Valley company.
