Banking Without a Bank: Bankers are increasingly installing automated teller machines in grocery stores and fast-food restaurants instead of in their branches, a survey by industry newspaper American Banker shows. Of 3,000 ATMs installed by the top 50 U.S. banks from June, 1993, to June, 1994, nearly 700 were installed away from branches, a 21% increase. Bankers say they are placing the machines in grocery stores, gas stations and office lobbies to make it more convenient for people to get at their money. BankAmerica Corp. recently said it would place ATMs or mini-branches in 300 Lucky supermarkets in California.
