It is “sporting” of you to run a front-page story and color photo, “Daughter Taps Mother to Help Lead Sri Lanka” (Nov. 15). It is consistent with your progressive reporting of international events--you perform a useful service in a crucial arena.
Why is it that “developing” countries in which we claim women are oppressed as “second-class citizens”--Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Turkey--can have women heads of state (including Muslim states) but not “developed” America, where women are liberated and equal?
Could it be that it is time for us to rethink and revise our ideas and judgments about other peoples and cultures?
