LONG BEACH : Duplex Torn Down After Complaints of Gang Activity

City wrecking crews tore down a two-story Long Beach apartment duplex Thursday that local residents claim had become a haven for gang members.
“There are a number of buildings that we’ve identified that need to come down,” said Long Beach City Councilwoman Jenny Oropeza, who led the campaign to demolish the Department of Housing and Urban Development-owned building on Summit Street.
The first-term councilwoman’s district covers the city’s Summit-Canal area, a neighborhood watched closely by police because of its reputation for gang- and drug-related activity.
“We’re starting a neighborhood campaign to go building to building to look at conditions, and to start looking at (building) code enforcement,” said Oropeza, who made neighborhood upgrading a major part of her election campaign.
