BREA : Planning Commission OKs Birch Hills Project
- Share via
Another bureaucratic hurdle was cleared by the Birch Hills residential and commercial project this week when it was approved by the Planning Commission. The next step for the large-scale project is a City Council hearing May 16.
The project applicant, Unocal Land & Development, is asking the city to approve an environmental impact report and zoning changes that would allow construction of a 60-acre commercial retail center and 363 single-family homes north of Imperial Highway and west of Kraemer Boulevard.
The site is currently occupied by the Birch Hills Golf Course and Unocal’s demolished Collier Plant, which produced nitrogen-based fertilizer for nearly 40 years before closing in 1991.
Unocal Land & Development also wants to build a gated community of 112 single-family homes south of Imperial Highway and east of Placentia Avenue. The 15-acre site is now part of the Imperial Golf Course.
