A private contractor digging in the ground cut a fiber-optic cable Thursday, preventing many long-distance connections with AT&T; customers in Orange County, a Pacific Bell spokesman said.
The cable carried calls from a PacBell central office in Santa Ana to AT&T;, spokesman John Britton said.
He said the cable has approximately 15,000 paths for calls, but he did not know how many calls or customers were affected.
Calls within the 714 area code and those with other long-distance carriers were not affected, Britton said.
The cable was cut at 10:34 a.m. near Bristol Street and Alton Avenue. Britton did not know why the contractor was digging.
