The Boston Red Sox put Jose Canseco on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right groin. The move is retroactive to May 15. The Red Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Tim VanEgmond from triple-A Pawtucket to take Canseco’s spot on the roster.
Canseco also has a bruised elbow and a pulled rib-cage muscle. He also has been battling flu.

The Pirates’ board of directors was expected to vote today to sell the five-time World Series champions to cable TV franchise owner John J. Rigas.
However, two board members told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that an official vote could be weeks away while several issues are resolved. Rigas, a 70-year-old lifelong baseball fan, was chosen by Mayor Tom Murphy as the city’s preferred buyer last November.
