Child Support Payments Were Doubled
* The article regarding unpaid child support (May 15) states that child-support delinquencies are increasing at “an uncontrollable rate.” That article did not say that in 1992, the California Legislature saw fit to effectively double child-support amounts and to encourage district attorneys to collect these higher amounts.
Perhaps this overnight doubling of support amounts has something to do with the delinquency rate. Or perhaps many newly divorced mothers feel they have no financial obligations to their children and this should all be on Dad’s shoulders. There are some deadbeat dads out there, but I know there are a lot of moms who take advantage of the new law and follow the advice of their attorneys, rather than their conscience.
