NORTH HOLLYWOOD — A 27-year-old man was killed and two other people were injured early Saturday when a driver lost control of his car and careened down an embankment off the side of the Hollywood Freeway, authorities said.
The unindentified man was pronounced dead at the scene after rescuers used rescue equipment to extract his body from the overturned car, Officer Garry Goldenberg of the California Highway Patrol said.
Police said Alex Mota, 21, the car’s driver, was apparently speeding northbound on the freeway near the Lankershim Boulevard exit when he lost control of the car and struck a tree before going down the side of the freeway about 1:30 a.m., Goldenberg said.
Mota of Van Nuys was listed in stable condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. Mota was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter, police said. One of the passengers, Carlos Ayala, 15, of Van Nuys, was thrown from the car and suffered minor injuries, police said.
