A collision on the southbound San Diego Freeway at the peak of rush hour Tuesday sent at least two people to the hospital and backed traffic up for miles.
The 5:30 p.m. accident occurred south of Irvine Center Drive, closing three lanes and backing traffic up to Jamboree Road, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Keul.
Details on the accident were not available Tuesday evening, but County Fire Authority officials said two people were taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
A nursing supervisor there said they both had serious injuries and one probably would be placed in intensive care, but both were expected to recover.
