Mechanical Methuselahs, many believed extinct, will return with a roar to the Ventura Raceway on Saturday night for the fourth annual Ventura Vintage Short Track Races.
Almost everything with two wheels and an engine will be racing around the fifth-of-a-mile dirt oval. Motorcycle classes include pre-1924, American and European pre-1974, hand-shift, foot-shift and 1000cc.
There’s also an old-timers open for riders over 50. “For them, we’ll supply oxygen,” promoter Dave Hansen said.
Last year’s races drew 180 riders, many from Ventura County.
Orchestrating all that motorized mayhem will be none other than the Vin Scully of motorcycle racing, Bruce Flanders, the opening-night announcer when the raceway made its debut in 1971.
* Gates open at 1 p.m., with practice at 5 p.m. and racing at 7. Admission is $12 for adults and free for those under 12.
