TUSTIN : Council Delays Action on Apartment Proposal

The City Council has delayed action until July 17 on a controversial Irvine Co. proposal to construct more apartments in the east Tustin area than now permitted.
The proposed changes to the East Tustin Specific Plan and the East Tustin Development Agreement would alter the relative densities and positions of residential and commercial zones now allowed within the area bounded roughly by the Santa Ana Freeway, the Orange city limits, Jamboree Road and Browning Avenue.
Some residents have opposed the plan, saying the higher number of apartments proposed would increase traffic and crime in the area.
Under the proposed revisions, Irvine Co. would develop a 40-acre parcel that the Tustin Unified School District had previously planned to use for a school site and would be released from an obligation to build a hotel, according to a report to the council.
