Valleywide : Freeway Landscaping to Double as Ads

If you’ve ever been distracted by Bette Midler’s “Adopt-a-Highway” sign along the Ventura Freeway, brace yourself for the new “Living Logo”--ads made of plants that will soon adorn the landscaping areas alongside the freeways.
Caltrans said Tuesday it will offer businesses the chance to display a logo up to 75 feet long and 40 feet high--so long as it’s made of certain living plants.
In exchange, the businesses will agree to maintain a section of land eight acres or larger along a freeway for two years, the state Department of Transportation said.
Caltrans will establish rules on irrigation, maintenance, trash pickup and allowable plants.
“Adopt-a-Highway,” in which volunteers and companies who pick up litter alongside the freeways are recognized with roadside signs, saves the state about $22 million each year in labor costs, Caltrans officials said.
