SEAL BEACH : Applications for Manager Flood City

It may be one of the smaller cities in the county, but Seal Beach has received 74 applications for the job of city manager from throughout the United States since the departure of Jerry L. Bankston last month.
City Clerk Joanne M. Yeo said she expects more than 100 applications by Monday’s deadline.
Bankston left his $84,972-a-year job to become city manager of La Habra, where his annual salary is now $98,000. He is credited with helping to eliminate the city’s $1.2-million budget deficit of four years ago. But budget cuts that eliminated more than 25% of the city’s employees left Bankston and other city staffers doing multiple jobs.
“Everyone in this city does more than their jobs require,” Yeo said. “We wouldn’t survive any other way.”
In June, the city hired Jack Shelver, a former San Diego area city manager, to replace Bankston temporarily. Shelver said city officials will begin reviewing applications next week.
