LAGUNA NIGUEL : Gone Fishin’ at Lake Laguna Niguel

Lake Laguna Niguel, only 10 minutes from the El Toro Y, could not contrast more sharply with the nearby, often-gridlocked freeway interchange.
Willows line its banks, and rolling hills provide such a buffer from traffic noise that the small lake is reminiscent of a rural fishing hole.
That charm has made it a weekday haven for retirees, who stop by to relax and chat as much as to fish. They may go home empty-handed, they say, but not disappointed.
“I did have four or five good bites,” said Ed Bayer, a retiree who had the entire 60-acre lake to himself Wednesday except for his cocker spaniel, Sandy.
“I usually go ocean fishing,” Bayer said. “But this lake is so pretty, it’s very enjoyable to fish here.”
The lake is stocked with bluegill, catfish and bass. And, for those who don’t know a rod from a reel, classes are offered by lake management.
“We’re very family oriented,” said lake manager Daryl Fischer. “Everybody comes down here, from the professional fishermen to Joe off the street.”
