In its first season of Division I play, Los Alamitos was unbeaten in the regular season and won two playoff games--running its Southern Section-record unbeaten streak to 47 games--before losing to eventual champion Mater Dei in the semifinals. Both Esperanza and Edison lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Griffins’ Brad Melsby finished his career as the county’s all-time leading receiver in receptions (185), yardage (2,979) and touchdowns (35), earning The Times Orange County back of the year honors. Melsby, who received a scholarship to UCLA, was also the league MVP, with 77 catches for 1,204 yards and 14 touchdowns. Other top performers included Los Alamitos quarterback Kevin Feterik (2,911 yards, 27 touchdowns); Esperanza running back Dahrin Footman (1,875 yards, 24 touchdowns); Esperanza tight end Brian Forth (61 catches, 1,039 yards, nine touchdowns); Marina running back Andy Harrison (658 yards); Edison receiver Andy Linnen (62 catches, 752 yards); Edison running back Brad Lisotto (1,153 yards, 15 touchdowns); Edison quarterback PatMarkovsky (2,088 yards, 19 touchdowns); Esperanza quarterback Chris Stretch (2,006 yards, 14 touchdowns); and Esperanza receiver Ryan Wilkins (41 catches, 611 yards).
