Orange County Sheriff’s officials asked for the public’s help Friday in solving the slaying of an 18-year-old San Clemente man shot in the center of town Monday by an occupant of a light blue 1970s Mercedes-Benz.
Jose Zarate Chavez was shot about 8:30 p.m. at Ola Vista and Avenida del Mar. He was driving a white Mercury Lynx. At the stoplight, Chavez and his friends exchanged words about gang affiliation with the five occupants of the Mercedes, and shots were fired, investigators said.
Sheriff’s officials are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Investigators Hans Strand or Mark Simon at (714) 647-7055. After hours, call (714) 834-6490.
