Westside : Chabad to Hold TV Fund-Raiser

When you’re flipping through the television channels Sunday evening, you’re likely to hit upon a star-studded telethon on KCOP, Channel 13. This one isn’t for Jerry’s kids. This one, they say, is for God.
The fund-raiser is sponsored by Chabad, one of the most influential Hasidic movements within the Jewish religion. The group runs synagogues and residences, schools and social service programs.
Signed up for the telethon, which runs from 5 p.m. to midnight, are celebrities such as Bob Dylan, Whoopi Goldberg and Michael Douglas.
This year is a double celebration for Chabad: the 30th anniversary of the movement in California and the 15th year of the telethon.
Last year, the telethon brought Chabad $3.4 million to fund its outreach programs. This year’s telethon goal?
“The sky,” said Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, West Coast director of Chabad. “Only God knows.”
