PREP ROUNDUP : Tustin Defeats Santa Ana in Cross-Country

Tustin, ranked third in the county, beat second-ranked Santa Ana in a Golden West League boys’ cross-country meet Thursday at Santa Ana.

Tustin’s Mike Gavar passed Santa Ana’s Danny Rivero and teammate Daniel Smith in the final 50 yards and held off Rivero at the tape to win the race.

Gavar completed the three-mile course at Irvine Park in 15 minutes 39 seconds. Rivero was second (15:40), Smith third (15:41) and Tustin’s C.J. Marciales fourth (15:41). The top five finishers were within three seconds of each other.

Tustin remains undefeated at 4-0. Santa Ana dropped to 3-1.

In another Golden West League meet:

Saddleback 16, Ocean View 47--Jose Alvarado won the three-mile race at Central Park in 16:23 for 10th-ranked Saddleback (3-1).

In the Empire League:

Katella 15, Kennedy 50--Edgar Benitez, Erick Miramontes and Juan Vanegas all crossed the line in 16:03 for top-ranked Katella (3-0, 3-0) on its three-mile course.

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

El Toro 19, Woodbridge 44--Becky Miske finished first in 19:18 for sixth-ranked El Toro (2-0, 2-0) on the three-mile course at Woodbridge.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 16, Mater Dei 43--Laura Kroninger of Dana Hills pulled ahead near the end of the race to beat teammate Bree Dennison in 18:52; Dennison finished in 19:10. Dana Hills, ranked fourth in the county, is 2-0 in league.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 16, Edison 45--Kristin Hawking’s 18:18 finish for third-ranked Esperanza was almost a minute ahead of the second-place finisher, teammate Crystal Smith. Esperanza is 2-1 in league.

In Sea View League girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 12, Newport Harbor 6--Nina Vaughan and Megan Wachtler swept their singles sets to lead second-ranked Corona del Mar (7-2, 2-1) over seventh-ranked Newport Harbor (2-1 in league).

In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:

Newport Harbor 3, Corona del Mar 0--Jennifer Carey had 13 kills for ninth-ranked Newport Harbor (3-4, 2-0), which won, 15-13, 15-9, 15-6.

Santa Margarita 3, El Toro 1--Michelle Chambers, with 17 kills, and Sabrina King, with 13, helped seventh-ranked Santa Margarita beat El Toro, 15-7, 15-5, 13-15, 15-2. Michelle Sarkees had 40 assist for the Eagles (8-0, 2-0).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 3, Mission Viejo 0--Michelle Quon had 14 digs, Jamie Bari nine and Erika Tillman eight for eighth-ranked Dana Hills (3-6, 1-1), which won, 15-2, 15-4, 15-9.

Mater Dei 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Roberta Gehlke had 12 kills for second-ranked Mater Dei (6-0, 2-0), which won, 15-1, 15-12, 15-12. Whitney Uhl had 16 kills for the Mustangs (3-5, 0-2).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 3, Marina 0--Melissa Wendt had 14 kills for top-ranked Huntington Beach, which won, 15-3, 15-4, 15-4. Sophomore Lindsay Phillips had 15 kills for Marina.
