COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Powell Moves From Safety to Fullback
- Share via
Coach John Robinson will move freshman reserve safety Marvin Powell III to fullback this week, bolstering the Trojans’ suddenly thin running back corps for Saturday’s game at Notre Dame.
Backup tailback LaVale Woods pulled a hamstring against Washington State last Saturday and is expected to miss at least two games. Powell, 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds, played fullback in high school.
Robinson said junior Mark Farlin, a special teams player, will also be available to play fullback if needed.
Since Sept. 23, USC has lost Leonard Green with a foot injury, Shawn Walters to a suspension and Woods. The Trojans’ only available backs after Saturday were tailback starter Delon Washington and backup Rodney Sermons, and fullback starter Terry Barnum.

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz can’t turn his head because of the back brace he has worn since his spinal surgery Sept. 12.
He gave this explanation as to how he drives: “I come to a stop sign, stop, honk the horn a lot . . . and just go.”
